REFERRAL SERVICES
At Newport Veterinary Hospital, we’re pleased to offer outpatient abdominal and cardiac ultrasound services, as well as Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHATs), as referral options to support you and your patients—while you maintain primary care
Our team’s goal is to function as an
extension of your practice, offering collaborative, outpatient support in a way that strengthens your client relationships and preserves continuity of care.
Ultrasound & Echocardiography Services
We partner with Oncura Partners to provide in-hospital imaging using high-quality ultrasound equipment. All scans are reviewed by boarded specialists:
- Abdominal and focused ultrasound studies are interpreted by a
board-certified internist
- Echocardiograms are reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist
Please Note: We are unable to accept referrals for juvenile murmurs for echocardiogram; these are best seen directly by an in-person cardiologist. In dogs, that is any problem that arise under the age of 2. In cats, it is any problem that arise under the age of 12 months. If the patient had a condition prior to the age but is now older than the cutoff, they are still ineligible due to their condition being considered congenital.
You receive a copy of our exam findings and the specialist’s report for ongoing client communication and care within 72 hours.
Other services offered
Medical Case Referrals & Second Opinions;
While we do not have a boarded internist on staff, our experienced veterinarians are available to assist with more complex cases when clients are unable or unwilling to travel to a referral hospital. We are happy to offer second opinions and support with internal medicine-style cases.
In these cases, we ask that clients be informed that we are not specialists, but we do have access to specialist input through Oncura’s reviewing veterinarians. These appointments begin with a consultation with one of our doctors, followed by diagnostics and recommendations for short- and long-term care. All records and results will be forwarded back to your clinic for continuity of care.
Virtual Neurology;
Most often used for complex seizure management or neurologic presentations. These include an examination and consultation with one of our veterinarians who will then do a telemedicine consultation with a boarded neurologist.
Anesthesiology Consults;
Tailored anesthetic planning for higher-risk cases, which can also include virtual monitoring during anesthetic events.
We are also equipped to assist with most soft tissue surgeries and COHATs.
How to prepare your patient for their visit with us
We request that all patients come in on pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs) to make their visit as comfortable as possible with us
All patients arrive between 8 to 9 am to be checked in by the licensed technician who will be working with their pet. They will then be seen by one of our veterinarians before proceeding with their planned procedure. By mid-afternoon, their pet's procedure should be finished and we'll be in touch to set up a discharge time. Once the owner arrives, the same licensed technician who checked their pet in that morning will discharge and go over any instructions with the owner.
If the patient is aggressive, please advise us prior to their appointment so we can properly prepare for their pet.
